A vortex is usually referred to as a space in which the spiralling motion of water or air attracts its surroundings to the center. In Sedona, many believe that there exist pockets of collective energy that foster a heightened spiritual state ideal for meditation and reflection.
Why Sedona is a Spiritual Destination
Sedona's energy became popular when a group of people came to the area in 1987 during what José Arguelles, author of The Mayan Factor (1987), dubbed a Harmonic Convergence.
The convergence, which fell on August 16th and 17th, corresponded with the planetary alignment of the Sun, Moon, and six planets. To many, this alignment signified the beginning of a new age of spiritual consciousness, thus creating pilgrimages to Sedona and other destinations worldwide that were said to have a similar energy. The people who came hoped to shift the world's focus from self back to global awareness and nature.
What is the Purpose of Visiting a Vortex in Sedona
Just as water in a whirlpool swirls toward a focal point, several spots in Sedona act as a center for a maelstrom of the earth's energy. Visitors and locals may not always feel this energy as it's dependent on a person's individual sensitivity.
Types of Energy Found in Sedona Vortexes
Many spiritual seekers believe that the vortexes have either a dominant masculine or feminine presence. According to this theory, individuals with stronger masculine qualities would have a stronger reaction to the energy in masculine vortexes and vice versa.
John and Micki Baumann of Sedona classify masculine energy as resulting from strength, the ability to have confidence and direction in one's own life, whereas feminine energy manifests from goodness or the ability to respect and value the decisions of others. Whereas masculine energy thrives on accomplishments, feminine energy channels doing what is just and fair.
Although the vortex energy may affect individuals differently, many report feeling recharged, finding clarity and enough peace to step out of a day to day mindset and reflect on life in a wider, more global perspective. Even so, it's best experienced first hand.
Four Main Vortex Sites in Sedona
The following four vortexes are easily reached by car with a map and are the best known in town.
- Red Rock Crossing/Cathedral Rock:
- Airport Mesa
- Boynton Canyon
- Bell Rock
Visitors may also notice that other spots throughout Sedona radiate a similar energy. An interesting indicator of vortex energy is a juniper tree with twisted branches, an effect of the energy sculpting its growth in a swirling, circular fashion.
Many travel to Sedona to hike among its red rock formations and escape from urban stressors, but not all are aware of the invisible mysteries that have accumulated in the area. While people can write and speak about the power of Sedona's vortexes, it's impossible to describe the energy that exists without experiencing it for oneself.
